Over the past 16 years of being in business, I've lost count of the number of times I've said, "I'll never want a studio". Time has a funny way of changing your perspective though.
While I still don't need a studio for most of the things I capture such as theater, seniors, families and events, it's a bit different when doing headshots for actors, dancers, singers, artists and business professionals. Turns out that a dedicated studio space is a fantastic thing to have. And so begins a new chapter for me!
I had toyed with the idea of having a studio over the years, but never very seriously. Once upon a time, a few friends and I had talked about sharing a space but those never came to pass. However, as the number of headshots sessions I did increased, the idea of my own dedicated space seemed more enticing where I could book sessions on any date, at any time. Not having to haul all of my equipment back and forth (lights, backdrops, stands, umbrellas, etc) also seemed like a dream.
Whenever I needed an indoor space for headshots, Society57 was my go to place. If the weather was cruddy or I needed to set up lights and a backdrop, that was my spot! It's a fabulous coffee shop in downtown Aurora with an open event space in the back. I'll be forever grateful to Scott and his team for their generosity in allowing me to hold my sessions there. (side note - they have the absolute best coffee! you should go sometime.)
Lucky for me, my mom is a long time realtor, so I asked her for help. We found a few places that I liked and one that seemed promising, but it fell through. So, I kept looking, knowing that the right spot just hadn't made itself known yet.
Finally, in mid-October 2025, I found the perfect space. The owner wasn't quite ready to have me move in at that moment, but things were looking good. Finally, on February 1st of this year, I moved into my brand new studio! I generally go through life believing that everything happens in the time and place it is supposed to and this was yet another example of that.
This space is exactly what I was hoping for. Here’s a sneak peek! I would love for you to come see it in person. Come get in front of my lens. I'll even make you a latte you can keep hot on my mug warmers!
You can find me at 55 S. Lake Street in Aurora, IL, 2nd floor. (by appt only).
We will have fun. I promise!
